Novojicinsko

Novy Jicin is the most interesting and frequently visited region of the North Moravia. It is situated in the dale of the Moravska brana (Moravian Gate), surrounded by the hills of the Oderske hills and the mountain range of the Beskydy. It has very profitable traffic position - there are the motorways, the railways nad the international airport in Ostrava-Mosnov which make the Novojinsko important. In the past the Amber Path has lead through this area.

Novojicinsko is the district extra-ordinary rich in the cultural and architectural monuments. The most historical valuable parts of the towns Novy Jicin, Stramberk and Pribor have been declared as the historic town reserves and in the tows Fulnek, Bilovec and Odry you can find the historic town zones. The district capital of Novy Jicin would suprise you with the picturesque square dating from the early 14th century and lined by many Renaissance houses with the archades.

The wooden cottages, the typical and unusual folk architecture have been preserved in Stramberk under the round tower Stramberska truba . Old Pribor is known thanks to its college of teachers, one of the oldest in Moravia. The others towns of North Moravia are able to offer to their visitors many intersting places. First of all, in Fulnek you can visit the church of the Holy Trinity, the castle, and the building of the one-time Czech Brethern Congregation, where Jan Amos Komensky (John Amos Comenius), the founder of modern pedagogy, once worked. Rich history has also the towns Odry, Bilovec and Frenstat pod Radhostem.

The memory of many important and significant persons reminds the rich culture history of this district. Pribor is the birthplace of Sigmund Freud, the famous founder of psychoanalysis, who has a memorial in the town. The biologist and the priest Johann Gregor Mendel, who discovered the law of heredity, was born in Hyncice and the noted Czech historian and politician of 19th century Frantisek Palacky came from Hodslavice. The Czech famous painter of the historic views Zdenek Burian was born in Koprivnice and his paintings can be seen in Stramberk.
